If Face was all about high school drama between two rising football stars, it could be fantastic and unique, but it moves to the NFL too quickly and gets lazy. The worst part is, this treacle-soaked drama could actually be a great mode if the end goal wasn't the NFL. This rival is played by Tye Sheridan of X-Men and Ready Player One fame, but ‘played’ is too strong an adjective for what he brings.Īll of his lines feel like they were mumbled down the phone at 6am. Your friend/rival has a congenital heart defect, a secret he tells you within minutes of meeting you that’s the level of melodrama here. However, it feels like Madden is more inspired by NBA 2K’s narrative, and if that’s the case it falls short dramatically.įace of the Franchise is a guilty pleasure of a mode, with CW Network levels of drama constantly in play. The obvious comparison is to Madden’s cousin, FIFA, and its storymode The Journey. Exactly the same."įace of the Franchise is another core mode, one which puts you in the shoes of a high schooler who gradually makes his way to the NFL, and hopefully even the Hall of Fame with hands weighed down by Super Bowl rings. Franchise mode itself is difficult to review, because it’s the same as it has been since Madden 19. Outside of simply playing football, there are three ‘core’ modes in Madden 21: Franchise mode, Face of The Franchise mode, and Madden Ultimate Team. MUT is the star player on this team, and Madden knows it.More energy goes into Face of the Franchise, but it’s woefully misspent.It feels like Madden doesn’t care about the fan favorite Franchise mode. However, it's best to just play it safe and don't get your hopes up too high as you wait. After backlash following the announcement that Franchise mode wouldn't be receiving much of an update, EA Sports has promised to look into the mode, so it looks as if Madden 21's Franchise mode will be receiving at least some sort of major update. Yes, it doesn't grease the company coffers like Ultimate Team, but come on: MUT is a well-oiled machine at this point, while Franchise has been rusting and gathering dust for essentially forever. It was certainly welcome, though, and with the next-gen consoles coming, the timing couldn't be better for something new and cool.Īlternately, maybe EA Sports will finally give Franchise mode the love and attention it deserves. After all, the only true new mode in Madden NFL 20 was Superstar KO - I'm not counting QB 1 here, as that was more of a refresh to an existing mode - which wasn't in the game when it first released. This year, the members of the 99 Club are: Earlier this month, EA Sports also announced the members of the 99 Club, an elite group of players who are good enough to garner a 99 overall rating in the game. This year, EA Sports released the ratings for Madden 21 a bit early, giving fans a chance to dive into their favorite player or team and check out who is the best of the best. There's something oddly entertaining about seeing anyone and everyone gripe about who's been done dirty by the ratings folks, along with the laughs that follow when the likes of Tom Brady joke about his own speed number. One of the best parts of any year's pre-Madden hype is the release and subsequent debate/complaining about NFL player ratings for the upcoming game.
